Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service to the nation.  As we move into the Memorial Day Holiday, please take a moment to think about those who have served the nation and, in the process, paid the ultimate sacrifice.

 

I personally would like to remember all of my friends who have sacrificed and those who have given their lives serving the nation who include Matt August, Sargent Binkley, Josh Byers, Doug Dicenzo, Christopher Johnson, Jaime Leonard, Mark Paine, Eric Paliwoda, Michael MacKinnon, Tommy Schoales, Ian Weikel, and Phil Esposito who the Freedom’s Light Charity Program is dedicated to.

 

Over the past few years, Memorial Day has changed for me from being overwhelmed with a feeling loss to an awakening of how heroes like those mentioned above remain forever present in our lives. Before launching into my training plan for the Marine Corps Marathon, I will be joining several friends from Stony Point Dental to compete in the June 6th Spartan Race. Personally, I am very excited about the challenge. It helps me honor those who have passed by recommitting myself to our shared values of being physically fit, mentally tough, and morally straight.

A pre-season ritual, the Spartan Race allows me to take inventory:  body, mind, and soul. Before the race, I write notes identifying every trouble spot that has aches or pains, then create a plan for how to “injury proof” myself. Then comes the race where all of us on the team get tested going up and down the Tuxedo Ridge ski slope, facing numerous obstacles together. Afterward comes my individual reflection. With a few bumps, bruises, and scraps I remind myself that this experience is the embodiment of living! Life throws challenges at us and our human spirit finds a way to adapt, overcome, and endure.

 

For those taking this journey for the first time, use this week to do some long stretches, light jogs, and write down your strengths and weaknesses. Most of all, have fun! Commit to no injuries.

Simple transformational challenge this week. Within the Body for Life Success Journal purchased, begin filling out your dream list and goals. Also, take your “Before Photo” and write down your initial measurements for weight, body fat %, etc. Then, schedule a physical, tell your doctor what you are doing, and get advice on how to proceed in a healthy, balanced way.

 

I know what I am asking you to do requires courage. If you’ve read this far, there is a piece of you that wants to believe you can find a better you. Don’t stop believing. Having just been through 2 rounds of the Body for Life 12-Week Challenge, I can honestly tell you the approach works. In over 8 months, I’ve lost at least 20 lbs. of fat and significantly increased my upper body strength. Through trial and error, I found the secret formula on how to continue losing more unwanted fat through 5 simple rules:

 
      1.  Drink lots of water and take vitamins daily
      2.  No “high fructose corn syrup” or artificial sweeteners.
      3.  Black coffee only. To improve sleep, no caffeine after 12 noon

      4.  No-to-low carbs after 2pm
      5.  No eating for 12 hours after my last meal.
