Congratulations to those moving forward with their action plans! Below is the transcript and recording of General Eisenhower’s execution order for the D-Day Invasion 69 years ago this Thursday. May his words serve to inspire as we begin our “great and noble undertaking.”

Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force:

“You are about to embark on the great crusade toward which we striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere are with you.

In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine: The elimination of Nazi tyranny over an oppressed people of Europe and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944. Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940 - 41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our home front has given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war and placed at our disposal great reserves of fighting men.

The tide has turned. The free men of the world are marching together in victory. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory.

Good luck!   And let us all besiege the blessing of almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”

Letters From Your Father

“Some Nights”

“Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck,

Some nights, I call it a draw…

Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle

Some nights, I wish they’d just fall off

But I still wake up,

I still see your ghost,

Oh Lord,

I am still not sure, what I stand for oh-oh

What do I stand for?

What do I stand for?

Most nights, I don’t know,

Dear Girls:

Welcome back and thank you for taking the time to read my notes!

Last year, the focus of my writing was to tell you about key decision points and lessons I learned from childhood until present. Now with this foundation laid, I hope to provide you some guidance and support for developing your own individual faith.

“Faith Formation” is one of the most critical things I am responsible for as your father. To be clear, my role is to not tell you what to believe. It is to simply protect that light of innocence, curiosity, and compassion within you until it is strong enough to burn on its own. Without it, it can be very difficult to experience the presence of God.

Here is how I think I can help. Each week during my training, I plan to share one of my most closely held beliefs that have helped me endure. They are special to me because they are “life-tested,” meaning that they are thoughtful, pragmatic, and proven to work under very tough conditions.

By writing this, I hope it helps you get started in defining your own beliefs. The question, “What do I stand for?” is a very challenging riddle to solve. Finding your answer is an iterative process of applying your beliefs in the real world and refining them as you go. The reward is you will be equipped to emerge on the other side of life’s storms stronger and ready to lead.

Is there a better gift a Dad can pass on to his girls? J

More to follow next week…

Love You Forever!

Working as a team to overcome obstacles during today’s Spartan Race was an awesome way to end the pre-season! After last year’s Toughman, I had a lot of difficulty with my lower back and right hip for about 3 months. Both are definitely strained from today but certainly remain capable for the long haul. The wisdom gained over the past 8 months for taking things at a consistent, moderate pace will be the key to a successful training period.

This week is the Official Week 1 of the 16-Week Triathlon Training Program. Here’s what this week’s schedule looks like:

Monday: Swim 10 x 100m; Long Stretch, Core Strengthening

Wednesday: Swim 5 x 300m; Bike 90min

Thursday: Swim 10 x 50m; Core Strengthening Workout, Stretch
