DESTINATION TOUGHMAN:  118 Days Until Race Day

"The secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Conan, you must learn its discipline.   For no one, no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts...

(Pointing to his sword)

This you can trust..."

Welcome back! I’m Patrick Curran, founder and author for the Freedom’s Light Charity Program. Since 2008, I’ve been running endurance races, writing journals, and inspiring readers to invest back into the nation by donating to Fisher House, Tuesday’s Children, Wounded Warrior Project, Children of Fallen Patriots, and the USO’s Operation Care Package.

Since the beginning of time, parents have done their best to teach their children important lessons that will shape how they see the world. No advice is perfect, but the intent is generally the same: To help the next generation avoid mistakes and live a better life.

For 2013, I will attempt to tackle “The Riddle of Steel” as a train for the 70.3 Mile Westchester Toughman on September 8th. And my hope is that through the rigors of training, my girls will receive the very best advice I can give them when they read these letters someday.

Looking forward to another great season! If you have any questions or comments about planning your own “Hero’s Journey,” let me know at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

God Bless,

Updates to the Freedom’s Light Charity Program

In the spirit of continuous improvement, I’ve made a few changes to the website, newsletters, and program. The intent is to maximize the reader experience and strengthen the program’s overall effectiveness.

Website: There are new videos on the homepage that represent some of the topics I will write about in 2013. Above the video library, there is now a big blue “Donate Now” button that makes it easier than every before to choose any/all of the charities you wish to donate to. In the Pat’s Journal section, I’ve listed all previous journal entries by year on the left side of the page. Each year has a different theme. For 2013, the theme will be titled “Beliefs.”

Destination Toughman: Starting in June, my official training period for the 70.3 Mile Toughman Race begins.  Each newsletter will open with a powerful, motivational message with “quick links” for donating. The second section, titled “Letters From Your Father,” provides thoughtful notes/lessons for my girls to read someday for advice and guidance. In the final section, I outline my workout plan and goals for the week.

Publishing of Newsletters: In previous years, the Freedom’s Light Newsletter has been distributed primarily through email to family and friends. Since publishing our website 3 years ago, readership expanded further with our homepage now registering over 88,000 visits. Going into 2013, we will continue to expand readership through various social medial networks, focused in NY, NJ, PA, and CT. If you are business owner who would like to donate to any of the 5 charities listed, Freedom’s Light will promote your business on our homepage and weekly newsletters that will be featured to this expanded audience. American Business Strategies - Serving the Community: During its 1st year, American Business Strategies worked to support the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and Rockland Community College through the Business Boot Camp Program. Enrollment was open to all in the community with full tuition reimbursement going to veterans who completed the program. This year, services will be expanded into Westchester with the sponsorship of Fordham University and SBDC. By serving to strengthen local businesses, our Freedom’s Light Charity Program benefits from this additional revenue source funding the charity program. To learn more, visit www.absinsights.com.

My hope is that these improvements further help readers, charity organizations, business donors, and returning veterans alike. Please take a moment to review our list of Freedom’s Light Sponsors below and think of them if you are in need of any of their services.

Hey Sponsors! Stand up and take a bow... Thank you for your generous support!!
